Shetland is a land apart; an archipelago that marks the junction between the Atlantic and the North Sea. It is a place of big skies, dominated by the oceans, where wildlife abounds. Seabirds significantly outnumber people here! There is a magic to all the islands in the island chain, but the northern isles have a special charm of their own. Yell, Fetlar and Unst (the very names conjure up a spirit of adventure for me) each have a unique character. As the most northerly point in the British Isles , Unst punctuates its national prominence at the cliffs of Hermaness, a spectacular backdrop to huge colonies of puffins and gannets. Fetlar, the garden of Shetland, has a more gentle face, but is no less thrilling with national rarities such as red necked phalaropes and whimbrel gracing its lochs and moors. Much of Yell’s coastline is first class otter habitat, and here, as with all the islands, my Ordnance Survey maps prove invaluable. By studying the topography in advance of any foray to watch or film wildlife, I can build a reasonable picture of where best to go in order to improve my chances of close encounters. With details such as bays, beaches, lochs and streams, all clearly marked, I can take lots of the leg-work out of exploring, and go straight to the most likely spots. I’d be lost without them!
