The siren call of Skye means that for many visitors Lochalsh is merely one end of a bridge across which they pass oblivious to the history and heritage of this small coastal village. But because the area commanded a vital sea route through the kyle, its history is as colourful as any in the Highlands. Within an hour’s drive of Lochalsh, both on and off the mainland, is countryside as vivid, inviting and rugged as any. Here, fjord-like sea lochs probe the coastal glens, high mountains rise almost from the sea, and 'hidden gems' of scenery surrender to anyone willing to strike out on foot.
