The countryside around Edinburgh is ideal for walking a superb mixture of rolling hills, expansive moorland and attractive rivers, bounded by fertile lowlands and an impressive coastline. A walk through Edinburgh city centre allows the walker to contrast the hustle and bustle of the old town with the elegant ambience of the new town. The city also forms one of the breathtaking views from a route to the summit of nearby Arthur's Seat. From Dirleton, there is a walk along the sandy Lothian coast, while the impressive ruins of Linlithgow Palace are on view from a loch-side stroll.
